A singer with body
Article Abstract:
Singing is an expression of your innermost feelings, according to Hungarian mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova. She began her musical career as a concert pianist, which is also about feeling, but finds that singing is more internal than playing the piano. She is keen to avoid performing a role in the same way each time, and this is why she welcomes collaboration with good stage directors. She greatly enjoys the fact that being on stage is like playing a game or being in a film.

Baritone who came in from the cold
Article Abstract:
Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky admits that his career took off rather too quickly after he won the 1989 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. At that stage he took it for granted that he would have a career in singing, but experienced many challenges while trying to establish himself in Russia. He soon decided to move to the UK, where he had his agent and friends. He regards his voice as his instrument, and only sometimes wishes that it were larger.

One step beyond
Article Abstract:
Composers are often given little attention when a new modern ballet is produced. In fact, close links between the composer and the choreographer are vital if the music is to be more than just a background for the performance. The score must be written to fit each movement, thus creating an integrated whole. This is particularly the case when dance is performed to live music.
