A Finnish gold medallist skier has an unusual blood profile which doctors studied and found abnormal response of juvenile blood cells to the hormone erythropoietin, normally prescribed to sufferers from anaemia or renal failure, but taken by some athletes to supplement their blood. This improves performance in endurance sports such as cross-country skiing and cycling, as more oxygen is supplied to the muscles. Some athletes increase their abilities by high-altitude training.

Plants can draw gold from earth

Researchers at New Zealand's Massey University have succeeded in extracting gold from the soil when it is treated with ammonium thiocyanate. Plants such as chicory can dissolve the metal in an absorbable form. The technique known as "phytomining" is thought to be viable as it costs GB 178 an ounce. A plant would need to accumulate around 17 micrograms of gold to be an economic proposition.
