A symphony is like the world: it must embrace everything
Article Abstract:
Composer Gustav Mahler deliberately included passages in his symphonies where the various instruments involved were extremely exposed, with pitch and inflection being constant difficulties. Modern orchestras have overcome many of these problems, but in doing so have eliminated the vital elements of Mahler's work. The ordered world of today has moved away from the extreme refinement and exaggeration which was so important to Mahler, but there are signs that a return to his original approach may eventually emerge.

The diva in me
Article Abstract:
Actress-singer Patti LuPone believes that she was destined to play Maria Callas one day. She is currently appearing in Terence McNally's play 'Master Class' at the Queen's Theatre in London, England. She points out that Callas made considerable personal sacrifice in conducting her famous master classes at the Juilliard School in New York City. Similar dedication has been required of LuPone in appearing in 'Master Class,' as she has had to work on developing her voice and on using an Italian accent.

Long live the queen
Article Abstract:
The opera 'Harvey Milk,' which features music by Stewart Wallace and libretto by Michael Korie, deals with the life of the former mayor of San Francisco, who was assassinated in 1978. It was commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera Co, and looks at the views and influence of the first openly gay city official in the US. The text follows the main character on a mythological journey to martyrdom, and the libretto is of an extremely high standard.
