A tender dilemma for Labour
Article Abstract:
Compulsory competitive tendering (CCT) legislation has brought considerable benefits to local authorities in spite of many of them originally being against the concept. Inefficient staff have been cleared out and costs cut, the emphasis of the legislation being cheapness at the expense of quality. It is unpopular in many situation where, for example, the already pitiful levels of remuneration for school cleaners are cut and their holiday and pension rights removed. Councils find themselves in a no-lose situation because even if things go wrong they can blame the government.

World trips, free lunches, outings to the races - an everyday tale of Labour councillors
Article Abstract:
The very strong position of Labour councillors in Doncaster, England, has created an unacceptable situation, according to some observers. Decisions are made by an inner caucus within the Labour group, and are simply endorsed by the rest of the councillors. There are reports that councillors have become arrogant, and that they are enjoying many free trips and other benefits. Conservative councillors claim that trips undertaken by Labour councillors have not received committee approval and that no reports have been submitted about what actually happened on the trips.

The little people of Paisley
Article Abstract:
The town of Paisley, Scotland, has attracted national attention recently as a result of allegations about political corruption. In fact, it has been the scene of fierce political conflict for many years, as is the case with many small towns in the UK. The Labour party has been in dispute with local MPs, who are regarded as not fitting in with the party's new image, while local people have always strongly supported the Labour party, whoever its candidates are. The Labour party has on many occasions clashed violently with the Scottish National Party.
