A tiny drop in the ocean with a ship's name on it
Article Abstract:
Microtrace is an invention for marking cargo so that the source of an oil slick can be traced. The synthetic compound containing artificial DNA molecules can be mixed into a cargo in a unique combination. A large ship carries 250,000 tons of crude oil which can be marked with 1 mg of Microtrace. It clings to the molecular structure of the oil and the ship can be detected even after several months. A law requiring cargo marking would be necessary to produce consistency and make the system work.

The island hopper's guide to the Indian Ocean
Article Abstract:
The Seychelles, the Maldives and Mauritius are the most popular islands in the Indian Ocean among Britons travelling directly to the region for a beach holiday, without visiting India or Africa first. However, there are other attractive islands in the Indian Ocean, especially for those who prefer a more adventurous holiday. These include Reunion and the Bazaruto islands. The Indian Ocean is ideal for those who wish to scuba dive.

Dumb waiters that square the ocean's food circle
Article Abstract:
Algae form submersible mats to travel to the water surface to obtain nutrients and sunlight necessary for their nutrition. Nitrogen and phosphate are among the nutrients these plants require. The tiny mats can transport nitrate from deep pools up to the surface. Dr Tracy Villareal of the Massuchusets Institute of Technology researched Rhizosolenia mats, which are common in the North Pacific, North Atlantic and Indian oceans.
