Accidents will happen, but not quite so often
Article Abstract:
The cost to employers of accidents at work is 4-9 billion pounds sterling a year, according to the Health and Safety Executive, and the overall cost to the economy is 11-16 billion pounds sterling a year. Against this background, more employers are giving higher priority to health and safety issues, but standards still vary greatly. Some are using external health and safety trainers, particularly the Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents (RoSPA), which trains 6-7,000 people a year.

The harmful side of ambition
Article Abstract:
Employment agencies often advertise for aggressive, ambitious staff but the competitive idea of ambition can be damaging to employees and employers. Working in a team is common and now staff are often assessed against objective job-related criteria raher than against one another. 'Dual ladders' can allow career assessment which reflects specialist and technical skills as well as suitability for management, allowing equal progress in status and pay.

Today's job is the start of the rest of your career
Article Abstract:
Many employers are now encouraging staff to assess their own training needs, rather than imposing training programmes on them. This is often done through personal development plans (PDPs), which vary considerably in focus. Some look only at the development required to perform better in the current job, while others consider longer-term options and a small number take a more holistic approach, looking far beyond the person's current job.
