After half a century, Blair could get it right in Europe
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is strongly drawn to Europe, but his government has made little real progress towards creating a genuinely positive mood about closer links with continental Europe. Blair should have taken the opportunity to hold a referendum on this issue while his government still enjoyed very strong support. His failure to do so means that the UK has now become marginalized as the single European currency comes into operation. It is damaging for the UK's reputation to fail to participate in such a significant initiative.

Can our island race ever link up with the Continent?
Article Abstract:
There is a continued sense of unease in the UK about establishing closer links with continental Europe, even though the Labour government regards continental Europe relatively favourably. Conservative Eurosceptics believe that it is best to deal with other nationalists. They feel that the UK cannot influence continental Europe very much, and that it is therefore better to remain at a distance from continental Europe. In contrast, Prime Minister Tony Blair believes that he can establish his views in continental Europe.
