After the landslide, let's get back to democracy
Article Abstract:
The outcome of the recent general election in the UK was very unrepresentative of the votes actually cast. The Conservative party won no seats in Scotland, for example, even though it won 17.5% of the vote there, and the Labour party actually attracted fewer votes than the Conservative party did when it won the 1992 general election. These anomalies make it clear that it is necessary to make changes to the voting system. It would be best to switch to a proportional representation system, which would allow many more ordinary people to vote in a way which truly reflects their views.

Don't be scared of the nanny instinct; it means well
Article Abstract:
Some observers in the UK have expressed fears that the government is trying to dictate to ordinary people in many areas of their lives. In fact, the freedom of the individual is not being threatened by government moves such as clamping down on tobacco advertising and banning the sale of certain types of beef. It is possible to claim that all leading figures in the government are in fact liberals at heart, while it is the Conservatives who really want to constrain ordinary people's lives.

The finest party gets the dustbin vote
Article Abstract:
The UK Liberal Democrats still find it very hard to be taken seriously. They have to adopt the moral high ground in order to justify their existence, and this leaves them vulnerable to mockery. The party has launched a sensible manifesto, but still seems unable to gain committed support from voters. It would perhaps be better for Liberal Democrat candidates and local parties to focus on campaigning on a single issue, rather than wasting their energy on national politics.
