Alwyn Rushworth
Article Abstract:
Physicist Francis Alwyn Rushworth studied for a BSc degree in physics at Imperial College, London, England, where he won the Tyndall Prize. He joined the staff of St Andrews University in 1947, and nuclear magnetic resonance became the focus of his work. He always gave teaching a high priority, and his lectures were clear and well-organized. He also undertook research into the properties of the solid state, and looked at the power of nuclear magnetic resonance to characterize quantitatively the internal dynamics of the solid.

Louis Essen
Article Abstract:
Physicist Louis Essen joined the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, England, in 1929 from Nottingham University College. He undertook research on quartz crystal oscillators under D.W. Dye, and later transformed an annular ring oscillator developed by Dye. He began to challenge the scientific orthodoxy of the time, and his most noticeable achievement came in 1955, when with colleague J.V.L. Parry he achieved successful operation of a caesium beam resonator.

Norris Bradbury
Article Abstract:
Physicist Norris Bradbury studied under Roland Tileston at Pomona College, Claremont, CA, where he obtained his first degree in 1929. He then studied gaseous ion mobility under Leonard Loeb at the University of California, Berkeley, and later spent two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on National Research Fellowship. After the second world war, he joined Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico, and was its director from 1956 to 1970.
