Now the inspector calls are less cosy
Article Abstract:
Official UK government inspectors will no longer inspect independent schools registered with the Independent Schools Council, which is most of these schools. Instead, they will merely monitor the inspectors used by the independent sector, and will focus on the 20% of independent schools not registered with the Independent Schools Council. From Jan 1999, independent schools will have to make their reports publicly available and operate standards of judgement, inspection frameworks and codes of practice in line with Her Majesty's Inspectorate.

Exponential growth of the first degree
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Education has accepted four-year maths degree courses for many universities. All students will attend a two-year course for basic training, leading to a Dip HE for those who commence employment or change subjects. A third year will cover analytical skills and conceptual thinking. Those intending to pursue research will follow two years of advanced studies more like continental European maths degrees. Less students take 'A' level maths and begin university with limited knowledge of calculus.
