An insular freedom to be incompetent
Article Abstract:
British society is organised for dissidence rather than wealth creation and does not admire technical expertise. Where continentals see the people creating a national triumph, the British consider progress as trying to subvert democracy. Four out of 10 school-leavers have no grade A-C GCSE and will be unemployable, creating social upheaval. Families could revert to teaching children structure, discipline and social order. If work were considered important, elitism would provide better services. Britain could avoid social upheaval by conscientious, consensual, conformist, more continental behaviour.

Follow the map and you'll find the mapmaker
Article Abstract:
It is possible to regard maps are revealing many details about cartographers and their clients. Indeed, cartographers can be claimed to be charting the inside of their own heads. They use the fact that the world can never be flat to align their portrayal of the world with the wishes of their clients or with the prevailing political climate. It is very hard to be subtle when making a map, and political maps can never really give a true representation of the political situation in a particular place. Maps are generally more about people than about geography.

Officials take their pound of flesh
Article Abstract:
The growing volume of legislation regulating the meat industry is presenting a serious danger to small, often family-run, slaughterhouses. These establishments produce meat of a very high quality, especially as the animals are not transported over long distances before they are slaughtered. However, hygiene and other regulations are becoming a great burden for them, and many are being forced to shut down.
