And now jobs for the boys and girls
Article Abstract:
Little attention has been given to the government teams which have been put together by Jacques Chirac and Lionel Jospin, the candidates in the second round of the French presidential election, as the campaigning has been very personal. Chirac has tried hard to be seen with a team which resembles a government in waiting, selecting relatively young, intelligent and loyal people. However, his plans have been disrupted by the very close result in the first round of the elections, making it necessary for him to select some supporters of Edouard Balladur. Jospin will have even greater problems assembling a government team, as he would have to deal with the large majority of the right in the National Assembly.

Race for the Elysee still open
Article Abstract:
Gaullist candidate Jacques Chirac is the strong favourite to win the forthcoming second round of the French presidential elections. However, it is still possible that the result could be closer than the opinion polls suggest, with around 20% of the electorate still undecided and the extreme-right National Front not yet having declared itself for either candidate. Most observers believe that the majority of National Front supporters will favour Jacques Chirac, rather than the Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin.

The other championship race
Article Abstract:
The French town of Auxerre has only 40,000 residents, but its football team has been very successful. It is now competing in the cup final against Nimes, having already reached the top of the French league and defeated a number of very well known teams. Its success has come to symbolise the conflict in France between the provinces and Paris, or 'real' France against unrestricted commercialism.
