From the street to City Hall: the first mayor of London?
Article Abstract:
It is vital that people take control of their own communities, rather than blaming others for their problems, according to John Bird, who is standing as an independent candidate to become the first mayor of London, England. He founded The Big Issue, the street magazine and charity that helps homeless people, and therefore has a strong understanding of the problems of the most disadvantaged people in the city. However, he has been involved in crime in the past, and has little mainstream political experience.

Sin, myth and the crusaders
Article Abstract:
A number of significant events in the UK in 1996, particularly the killing of schoolchildren in Dunblane, focused attention on moral trends in society. It has been very hard to find any real meaning at all in some events, while others have highlighted the emergence of a violent underclass, according to some observers. Politicians are now becoming increasingly tempted to indulge in empty moralising, rather than addressing the real issues.
