United Kingdom Culture Secretary Chris Smith has announced plans to make the transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting at some point in the period 2006 to 2010. However, the government cannot authorize this transition until it is sure that digital television is available to everyone and is affordable to the vast majority. The government believes that 70% of consumers must have access to digital equipment before a more detailed timetable can be established. However, research indicates that the eventual take-up of digital services will only between 50% and 60%.

The UK Conservative party is now having to come to terms with the fact that fiscal prospects have got much worse recently. Indeed, it is possible that chancellor Kenneth Clarke will not be able to put together an acceptable Budget in autumn 1996. There is already considerable speculation about pre-election tax cuts, but the reality will probably be extremely disappointing. There is scope for only very limited tax reductions in 1996, or possibly none at all. This may prompt the Conservative party to consider calling a general election very shortly.

The economic consequences of Kosovo
Article Abstract:
The financial markets have so far paid very little attention to the likely economic repercussions of the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. This conflict will probably not have any widespread economic consequences as long as some form of agreement can be reached relatively soon and there is no substantial escalation involving ground troops. However, this will not be the case if a prolonged ground war begins. Wars are not particularly expensive, but can have a damaging impact on business and consumer confidence, thus prompting recession.
