Archbishop Helder Camara
Article Abstract:
Archbishop Helder Camara became famous worldwide for his leading role in 'liberation theology'. He was born in northeastern Brazil, the 12th of 13 children, and studied in a seminary from when he was 14-years-old, being ordained at 22-years-old. He worked in Rio de Janeiro from 1936, and became concerned about the poverty that he saw there. He helped set up the Latin American Bishops' Council in 1955, and campaigned for the Catholic Church to ally itself with exploited and poor people. A military coup in Brazil in 1964 led to his being silenced at home. He retired as archbishop in 1985, and was replaced by a man who did not live as simply.

An efficient code in V1?
Article Abstract:
Representation of natural images by the most-efficient linear method is similar to those produced by the retinal ganglion cells in the primary visual cortex (V1). Efficiency of the ganglion cells in representing the images is optimized by neural network learning. The representation is sparse as only a group of cells in V1 represents the image. This sparseness is appropriate for future visual processing as it uses less energy. Coding preserves the image intensity information and permits minimization of neuronal output to the brain.
