Are Britain's schoolchildren more trouble than they used to be?
Article Abstract:
The number of children being permanently excluded from school every year in the UK could now have risen to more than 10,000, according to some sources. Numbers have risen since schools have been prevented from exluding children 'indefinitely,' and have therefore been forced to take more decisive action. Some reports indicate that pupil/teacher relations have reached crisis point, but it is more likely that problems are being caused simply because schools no longer have the time to develop a flexible response to poor behaviour.

Well done, Mr Cook. Your latest failure's a success
Article Abstract:
Oxfam has been critical of the new European Union code of conduct on arms sales, stating that it lacks real power and has too many loopholes. However, it is possible to argue that the code of conduct is actually quite an achievement for UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook. He made a commitment to a new code under the UK's presidency of the European Union, and has achieved this after lengthy and delicate negotiations. The code is not as tough as he would have liked, but is still better than having no code at all.

Tally Ho! Hunts get ready for the biggest showdown
Article Abstract:
It is expected that around 300 packs of hounds will be used at traditional fox hunting meets in the UK on Dec 26, 1998. There is a confident mood among hunters, although it is anticipated that around 1,500 people will attempt to disrupt the hunts and many more will make peaceful protests. There seems to be strong support among ordinary Britons for a ban on fox hunting, and anti-hunting groups are optimistic that the government will publish plans to outlaw hunting before the 21st century.
