Article Abstract:
Carlos Fuentes, the Mexican former ambassador to France is a prolific writer and has written and presented a BBC television series 'The Buried Mirror' about Hispanic culture. He was born in Panama City, brought up in Chile and Washington DC and trained as a lawyer in Mexico City and Geneva. He has had several public appointments as ambassador or visiting lecturer at Harvard and Cambridge. 'When the Air is Clear' was his first novel, written in 1959 and translated into 25 languages. He is influenced by Borges and writes in Spanish. He writes for five hours a day and reads for five hours a day.

Award-winning writer Aharon Appelfeld survived extremely traumatic experiences during the second world war, when he escaped from a concentration camp as a young boy and lived for three years in the Ukrainian forests. He survived only because he did not look Jewish and was very small. He remained mute for many years, and had great difficulty expressing his feelings. He later began writing, and his books have been translated into 26 languages. His work 'Badenheim 1939' is currently being staged by Second Stride.

He believes that science fiction ought to appeal to most people, and is reluctant to see his work receive only a narrow definition.
