As I paid tribute to Great Uncle Jack, I thought of something else. That it was memory without pain, as least for most of us
Article Abstract:
The Field of Remembrance is set up on the lawn next to Westminster Abbey in London, England, for one week each year around Armistice Day. It acts as a focal point for those who wish to pay tribute to friends and relatives who died in the First World War and subsequent conflicts. The First World War still holds a significant place in UK society, even though there are now few people still alive who were directly affected by it. The Royal British Legion poppy factory makes 30 million poppies, the sign of remembrance, each year, and in 1997 raised almost 17 million pounds sterling for the care of military casualties and their dependants.

The death of glory, the violent birth of peace
Article Abstract:
The First World War had an extremely wide-reaching impact on European society. It marked a clear break with the 19th century, and its effects were also felt for many decades afterwards, particularly as the death toll was so high and several countries lost almost an entire generation of young men. The First World War sparked off Europe's first great refugee crisis as large numbers of people fled westwards, and was thus the source of new ideologies on continental reorganization.

A memorial to the human endurance of grief
Article Abstract:
The First World War continues to hold a very strong grip on popular imagination in the UK. This is mainly because this war represented a victory for a people which had demonstrated that it could withstand extremes of human loss, hardship and grief. There is still a very strong national fascination with how this was possible. The great sufferings of the Western Front will always dominate popular perception of war in the UK.
