As annuity rates rise it may be a good time to 'buy' a pension
Article Abstract:
Those who hold a personal pension or a money purchase company pension plan will need to consider various types of annuity when they begin planning for retirement. The current annuity rate determines how much pension the holder will receive as a percentage of the value of the fund. Annuity rates are tied to the yield on gilt-edged stocks that mature in around 15 years, as insurers purchase these stocks to provide the income to pay the pension. Some observers believe that index-linked annuity rates are currently fairly generous.

Pension review could cripple smaller IFAs
Article Abstract:
A total cost of GB 2.5bn is faced by all 3500 UK independent financial adviser firms to cover their role in the second phase of the private pensions review. IFAs will have to review 42% of the 985,000 cases involved in the second phase to see if any of them lost out due to bad pensions advice. The average IFA turnover is just GB 0.2mn, lower than the GB 0.3mn average review cost, and their trade body, the IFA Assn, has warned that the cost could bankrupt 1000 IFA's.

Breast screening for older women could save 5,000 lives
Article Abstract:
Researchers say that additional investment to extend the breast screening programme in the UK to include women aged 69 would result in 16.4% fewer deaths from breast cancer and over 27 years stop 5,311 fatalities. The existing National Health Service (NHS) programme covers women aged 50 to 64 and reduces deaths by 12.8% but a British Medical Journal study released on 7 August 1998 says that investing an extra GB 10mn per year would improve the situation. *
