Baby heart surgeons were unsafe, says GMC
Article Abstract:
The UK General Medical Council has ruled that Janardan Dhasmana and James Wisheart were guilty of undertaking complex heart surgery on babies at Bristol Royal Infirmary despite having received warnings from colleagues about high death rates. The surgeons faced charges relating to 53 babies with congenital heart problems they operated on between 1988 and 1995, of whom 29 died. The Bristol Parents Support Group states that at least 91 children died or were brain-damaged following surgery at the hospital.

Why did no one stop these doctors killing so many of our children?
Article Abstract:
The case of James Wisheart and Janardan Dhasmana, who failed to stop operating on babies with heart defects at Bristol Royal Infirmary after concerns were expressed about high death rates, has raised a number of wider issues. These include why they were not stopped and why their results were so poor. A key issue to have emerged from the case is that there were no standards by which surgeons could assess whether their performance was acceptable and no guidelines on training in new procedures.

We're in danger of driving out our finest surgeons
Article Abstract:
It is right that the work of surgeons in the UK is closely scrutinized. However, it is important that the investigation of claims of unsafe practice is not permitted to become a witch hunt. Experienced medical experts must be used to investigate detailed medical issues if the truth is to be established. Care must be taken to restrict demands for someone to be held responsible every time a surgeon makes a mistake, especially in the case of high-risk heart surgery.
