Bad dads need help just as much as single mothers
Article Abstract:
Absentee fathers have come to be regarded very negatively as the 20th century draws to a close. There has been strong emphasis on the serious problems faced by single mothers, and these have often been attributed to fathers who are unwilling to accept moral or financial responsibility for their children. Tough tactics such as publishing the names of fathers who have failed to provide for their children have shamed some into accepting their responsibilities. However, this approach has also served to alienate some absentee fathers. It is now time to recognize that many absentee fathers are simply unable to support their children. They need help just as much as single mothers.

Discontent in the ranks of Tory women
Article Abstract:
Many women have found it very hard to become selected as a parliamentary candidate for the Conservative party, and getting elected as a female Conservative MP is even harder. The party is not in favour of positive discrimination, but is now under growing pressure to introduce measures which will make it easier for women to make progress within the party. Some women are even saying that there should perhaps be a woman on each final shortlist for seats where candidates have not already been chosen.

Affirmative action, negative effect
Article Abstract:
The recent decision by the Labour party to drop all-women shortlists is part of a much wider trend away from fighting against discrimination by using quotas. Affirmative action and positive discrimination programmes were first introduced in the US in the 1960s, and the US has now also become the first country to really question their effectiveness. Many people now acknowledge that discrimination has become much more complex and that quotas are not the best tool for the 1990s.
