Blair must make us sing together the Clinton hymn
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton's recent State of the Union message placed heavy emphasis on improving educational standards. Policies include encouraging parents to play an active role in pre-school education, increasing parental choice of school and investing more extensively in school buildings. Some of these policies are already espoused by the UK Conservative party, while others are those of the Labour party. Clinton's approach is bipartisan, and this could serve as a valuable example to a future Labour government, especially in the reform of pensions and welfare benefits.

Life in the Kingdom of Albia
Article Abstract:
There is growing awareness of possible changes in the relationship between the various regions in the UK. Against this background, it is possible that London and the south-east will eventually protest against having to subsidise poorer regions. They may even go as far as forming a separate country, which would have a population of 17.8 million. It would be richer than the UK as a whole, and also be quite wealthy by European standards. People living in London and the south-east would in fact become richer as residents of an independent country.

Whale sharks on the doorstep
Article Abstract:
The Ningaloo Reef of the coast of Western Australia is almost 200 miles long, and in many ways is more interesting than the Great Barrier Reef, even though it is much less well known. Visitors to the reef can swim with the whale shark, the largest fish in the world, and can also see a range of other wildlife. The reef is situated a long way from any large centre of population, so nearby tourist accommodation tends to be rather basic.
