Baruch Hirson

Article Abstract:

Historian, physicist and political activist Baruch Hirson studied physics part-time at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He lectured in physics at this university before being arrested in Jul 1964 for political protest. He was released in 1973, and then moved to the UK. He gained a reputation as one of the best historians of the left in South Africa. He lectured at Bradford University, England, and at the former Middlesex Polytechnic, and also took part in seminars on South Africa at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies.

Govan Mbeki

Article Abstract:

Political activist, journalist and teacher Govan Mbeki was born in Transkei, South Africa, in 1910. He first became interested in politics as a teenager, and in 1937 gained a BA in politics and psychology from Fort Hare. He joined the ANC in 1935, and was dismissed as a teacher because of his political activities in 1939.

Donald Woods

Journalist and campaigner Donald Woods was born in Elliotdale, South Africa, in 1933. He became the youngest editor in South Africa when he became editor of the Daily Dispatch in 1965. He came to public attention as a strong supporter of Bantu Stephen Biko.
