Lisbon dreams of turning wasteland into lasting beauty
Article Abstract:
City authorities in Lisbon, Portugal, regard the Expo98 event, which is to open on May 22, 1998, as a valuable opportunity to transform the city's run-down maritime area. Almost all the new buildings on the 840-acre site will be permanent, and it is hoped that they will become a lasting urban community once the exhibition itself is over. Very heavy rain has put the construction programme behind schedule, but it is now expected that all elements of the project will be completed on time, except some car parks and a hotel.

Lisbon bridge threatens wildlife
Article Abstract:
Environmentalists are raising objections to the construction of a 550 million pounds sterling, 10.5-mile bridge to link Lisbon with the south-eastern shore of the Tagus estuary. The building work has already started, but pressure groups still hope to prevent the scheme being completed. The bridge will have a significant impact on one of Europe's most important wetlands, and environmentalists claim that it also goes against European Union environment regulations.
