Beat the clock
Article Abstract:
Digital Equipment Corp's Year 2000 Factory in Dublin, Ireland, is one of the first of its kind. It is working with customers across Europe to deal with problems which could arise as a result of the year 2000 computer date change. The company has been able to automate the process of assessing computer code and changing it, thus relieving clients of the need to employ COBOL programmers, who are now in very short supply and able to command very large fees. It is also guiding clients about investigating their external links with other organizations.

Football's coming home - to your PC
Article Abstract:
The VirtuaLive system is able to convert broadcast video into graphics resembling computer games. In this way, Internet users can view football action from any angle. The system, invented by Orad Hi Tech Systems, is more interactive than video and can run on standard 28.8K modems and even older 14.4K versions. It will be used to make World Cup football action available on the Internet, although users will need both the Digital Replay and Virtual Replay packages and a powerful Silicon Graphics computer.

Death of an ill-informed hardware salesman
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common for ordinary people to purchase a computer via the Internet. Dell is now selling more than 1,000 computers a day through its Web site, which has only been operating since May 1997. This company's approach has been to offer a high level of content and functionality, while also ensuring that orders can be placed quickly and easily. Dell has found that people are more inclined to purchase extras and configure systems very specifically when they purchase online.
