There are many different reasons why a marriage can fail. In many cases, people who get married do not realise what an enormous step they are taking. Women can feel resentful at becoming a part of their partner's family, rather than being recognised in their own right, and are often treated as if they were intellectually inferior to their husband. In other cases, people can feel a great sense of disappointment after extensive preparations for a lavish wedding ceremony, and are unable to settle down into the routine of married life.

Considerable media attention has been given to the fact that Lara, the 12-year-old daughter of agony aunt Anne Atkins, went missing for 37 hours. This is because Atkins has gained a strong reputation for having very firm views about disciplining children and about issues such as divorce and sex before marriage. She had already been criticized by some observers for giving her children a considerable amount of independence. It seems that her daughter is very unhappy and feels that she cannot take her parents' love for granted.
