Black South Africans claim media racist and unpatriotic
Article Abstract:
Black journalists in South Africa are beginning to speak out against a system which they believe still promotes white domination of the media. They claim that they suffer humiliation in white newsrooms, that they are paid less than whites and do not receive training or promotion. Their complaints form part of a wider campaign against the media instigated by Thabo Mbeki, who is likely to succeed President Nelson Mandela. He has already been critical of the media for portraying South Africa in a negative light, particularly with respect to crime.

Africans war over Eve's footprints
Article Abstract:
Ancient footprints discovered by geologist Dr David Roberts in rocks at Langebaan, South Africa, have been cut from the rocks and taken to a museum. This is because they were being damaged by the elements and by people wanting to see them. Scientists are divided about the exact origins of the footprints. They are dated at between 100,000 and 200,000 years old, the time frame during which homo-sapiens first appeared, but some scientists believe that another hominid could have made them.

South Africans discover xenophobia as foreigners flood in looking for work
Article Abstract:
There are now around 14,000 foreign street traders in South Africa, making an estimated R100 million selling a wide range of goods. This situation is becoming a cause of considerable concern for native South Africans, especially in the light of the country's official unemployment rate of more than 35%. Black South Africans are adopting a more xenophobic stance towards migrants from elsewhere in Africa, and there have been a number of violent attacks on foreign traders.
