Black takes PM to court over his 'lost' peerage
Article Abstract:
Newspaper proprietor Conrad Black is taking legal action against Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, claiming that Chretian misused his office by making misrepresentations about him to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Queen. This is said to have been in revenge for critical articles about Chretien in Black's newspaper the National Post. The legal issue is whether Canada's opposition to Canadians accepting foreign awards that give privilege, status or title applies to those who obtain a second citizenship.

'First Nations' fight for freedom
Article Abstract:
Efforts by French separatists in Quebec to gain independence from the rest of Canada have prompted the Northern Cree and the Inuit, two of the largest national groups in Quebec, to seek independence too. They believe that they are entitled to separate from Quebec, forming their own province. These groups have traditionally identified more strongly with English-speaking Canada than with the provincial government in Quebec, and have never recognised Quebec's authority in their reserves.

Canada attempts to regain peace image
Article Abstract:
Canada is seeking international support for its plan to despatch a small military force to eastern Zaire, where it would operate as a disaster-assistance response team. This move is widely regarded as an attempt to make amends for Canada's poor performance in peace-keeping operations in Somalia. Canadian forces operate in both French and English, and have considerable experience of the Great Lakes region of central Africa.
