Glow of success undimmed by shadow of unrepentant Nigeria
Article Abstract:
The Commonwealth conference of 1997 was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the first such conference to use an economic theme. There were protests over human rights in Nigeria, and critics argue that the conference did not tackle this issue, preferring to placate Nigeria. The United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, used the conference as a political advertisement. There is some doubt as to how far an economic agreement can be reached when the economies concerned are so diverse, ranging from Mozambique to Canada.
