Blackmail! Petya, me and the KGB
Article Abstract:
Petya Korenev was a friend of Reuters correspondent Julian Nundy when he was a British Council exchange student in Kiev, at the time of the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. In 1974 Nundy was asked to return from a Reuters assignment in Moscow when the KGB purported to have a statement accusing him of a homosexual relationship. Korenev was repeatedly warned not to continue his friendship with Nundy and they did not meet for 16 years. Korenev pursued a military career to avoid KGB observation.

No hiding place from the legionnaires
Article Abstract:
The French Foreign Legion 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) took over airport security at Sarajevo from the UN Protection Force. Their task is to protect the convoys of humanitarian aid. About 1/5 of the 2,000 who apply to the Foreign Legion each year are selected. The top 20% join the 2e REP. Lies about their biography are acceptable. Fifty-two per cent of the Foreign Legion must be foreigners, who are taught sufficient French language for daily living.

UN troops spot their national differences
Article Abstract:
The UN Protection Force (Unprofor) in Sarajevo comprises Egyptian, French and Ukrainian battalions. Soldiers of other nationalities are also present. They are amazed by UN bureaucracy and cost limitations, and by the behaviour of their foreign colleagues. The Ukrainians treat their men the worst. They are keen black marketeers. The British were considered the worst drunks, but the most professional soldiers.
