Blue chips go crimebusting
Article Abstract:
Many UK companies believe that they should play a role in reducing crime, according to a survey by MORI. They are particularly keen to become involved in providing resources for community service order schemes. Boots Co, for example, is allowing offenders on community service orders to work on a recycling scheme at one of its warehouses. In contrast, few companies are willing to develop policies on the recruitment of former prisoners as permanent employees. Probation officers point out that gaining experience of the world of work can be vital to ensuring that young offenders become employable.

Does that TV in the sitting room make your home a prison?
Article Abstract:
Television has been presented as a luxury for prisoners, and also as a reward. It is seen as a way of keeping prisoners calm, like a tranquilizer, and has become more important as prison budgets are cut. It is used to keep the aged and small children quiet, and is a cheap option. Television can contribute to crime by showing violence. Boredom can be healthy since it can promote resourcefulness. People outside prison who watch too much TV also become weak and boring, and choose to be like prisoners.
