The residents of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, have welcomed the fact that the city has been taken over by the opposition Northern Alliance, forcing Taliban troops to flee. The mainly Tajik and Uzbek population had never fully accepted Taliban rule.

There are fears that Nepal's Maoist insurgents will become increasingly influential if the result of the forthcoming second and final phase of the general election produces an even division between the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Nepal's two main parties. There is no sense of a low-grade civil war in Kathmandu, Nepal, but the Maoists have established a strong presence in remoter parts of the country. Nepal has historically been a very peaceful country, but violence is now becoming part of everyday life in rural areas.
