Bombs blow US diplomacy to shreds
Article Abstract:
A bomb attack in Jerusalem, Israel, has led to the postponement of a planned visit by a special envoy from the US, Dennis Ross. President Bill Clinton has asked Palestinian authorities to increase security and has asked for more commitment to peace from Palestinians and Israelis. US involvement in the peace process was already lessened from April 1997 when Clinton failed to persuade Israel's Prime Minister, Bejamin Netanyahu, to give up a plan to construct Jewish settlements on the West Bank. Egypt and some other Middle Eastern countries and Europe appear to be seeking to take on the US role in the peace process.

Arafat trapped between the angry and the frustrated
Article Abstract:
Yasser Arafat has been placed in a difficult position following the bombing of a Jewish market in Israel in Jul 1997. Israel has demanded that Arafat tackle terrorism and extradite Palestinians sought by Israel in order for peace talks between Palestine and Israel to continue. Arafat would be discredited if he gave in to these demands thoough he may take some action against groups such as Hamas. Critics of Israel argue that the suicide bombings by Palestinians are the result of Israel's policies toward Palestine.
