Book, listen and learn
Article Abstract:
Growing concern about cuts in school spending in the UK has prompted many parents to begin buying home-learning books for their children. This trend has been recognised at an early stage by supermarkets, some of which now even have their own home-learning series. Some teachers believe that this is a negative development, especially as children miss out on traditional books and are put under great pressure by their parents to achieve high standards. There is a danger of a gap emerging between parents who can afford home-learning books and those who cannot.

Surely an all-win situation?
Article Abstract:
Many UK universities are now using profit-related pay schemes in order to obtain the additional funds which they need to improve staff salary levels and to balance out cuts in the higher education budget. This move has been opposed by staff at some institutions, as such schemes inevitably bring more benefits to those who are already on higher salaries and do not really benefit the lowest paid employees at all. There is also concern that removing part of a salary will bring pension scheme complications.

Where now, Miss Brodie?
Article Abstract:
It can be very difficult for the UK's most gifted graduates to find an appropriate research post for a second degree. Most students take the easy option of remaining at the institution where they studied for their first degree. For those who wish to move elsewhere, there is very little information available. Some observers believe that it is now time for universities to significantly improve their recruitment strategies, especially as competition for overseas students becomes more intense.
