Borneo's forests burn on the bonfire of big business
Article Abstract:
There are forest fires covering between 15,000 hectares and 20,000 hectares in East Kalimantan, the largest province of Indonesian Borneo. The fires are likely to spread further, as no rainfall is expected. Indonesia has some of the largest tropical rain forests in the world, but the forested area is shrinking rapidly. Forests are coming under particular pressure from large numbers of commercial companies. They use fire as the quickest way of clearing forest, both to gain land for planting or mining and to convert logged land for agricultural use.

Soldiers bewitched by army of spirits
Article Abstract:
Ritual magic is very prominent in the ethnic conflict currently taking place in Borneo. It is widely believed that Dayak fighters can use ritual magic to protect themselves from the weapons used by soldiers defending the Madurese people, and also that curses are being placed on soldiers. Many soldiers are now very afraid to face up to the Dayaks, and some have even become mentally ill as a result of their experiences. Local people tell many tales about the powers of the Dayaks, especially the panglima, or war magician.

Head-hunting returns to the jungles of Borneo
Article Abstract:
Evidence is emerging that an extremely savage ethnic conflict is taking place in Indonesia, where there are 300 different ethnic groups. It is clear that tribal traditions still have a strong influence, and it is believed that the current ethnic conflict involves ancient practices such as head-hunting, cannibalism and witchcraft. The main conflict is taking place between the Dayaks and the Madurese, and there is evidence that atrocities have been carried out against Madurese settlers in Borneo.
