Bradford rises above the ashes
Article Abstract:
Significant changes have taken place in the Muslim community in Bradford, England, since some of the town's Muslims burned a copy of Salman Rushdie's 'The Satanic Verses' in front of Bradford City Hall in 1989. At that time, Muslims felt excluded and that this was therefore the only way of expressing their views. Now, they have other ways of protesting as British society has become much more open. Muslims now play a more active role in business, education and civic life in Bradford, and this is making them more open in dealing with sensitive issues.

The best place to be a Muslim
Article Abstract:
The British-born children of Asian immigrants to the UK are taking on a strong identity. The UK's education system has encouraged them to question their community and the society in which they live, and they have developed many analytical and debating skills. This is leading to the emergence of a British form of Islam, in which young people see themselves as Muslims, but not as Asians.

Pride and prejudice
Article Abstract:
The UK now has a population of 1.2 million Muslims, who are becoming a strong social and political force. This has led to a rise in racial tension, particularly as most British people do not understand Islam. Problems have been made worse by fundamentalist violence in other countries, and there is now considerable conflict with western views, especially in areas such as education.
