Britain's new barons battle for shopping supremacy
Article Abstract:
The UK now has more than 1,000 out-of-town superstores, while many stores in town centre locations have been abandoned. There has been a significant rise in the proportion of shopping trips made by car, and some observers believe that the creation of out-of-town superstores has led to a rise in car dependency. Some superstores have created very serious traffic congestion problems, and it is believed that the government is considering imposing a tax on supermarkets for the provision of free parking. It is hoped that this would encourage shoppers to use public transport.

Roboshops show the 'convenient' way forward
Article Abstract:
Leading supermarket chains in the UK are beginning to recognize that people are no longer willing to tolerate the drudgery associated with shopping for everyday items. Some have responded by setting up home delivery services, while others are moving towards employing specialist staff who can provide very high levels of customer service. Experts believe that superstores will inevitably become larger, especially as customers look increasingly for one-stop shopping. There is also a trend towards longer opening hours, with some stores even offering 24-hour opening.

That nice Alan Bennett takes the gloves off for Tory politicians, the Queen Mother - and Dennis Potter
Article Abstract:
A revised version of the diaries of playwright Alan Bennett, 'Writing Home,' which is to be published shortly is very critical of a number of leading figures in UK society. These include politician Michael Heseltine, the Queen Mother and writer AN Wilson. He is particularly critical of Conservative politicians, even going as far as to level serious accusations against Baroness Thatcher and her close associates.
