Can we trust the judges to make our laws?
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems to be favouring a legal system in which courts will not have the power to overturn statutes agreed by parliament as it prepares a White Paper incorporating the European Convention of Human Rights into UK law. Judges will not be able to put to one side laws made by parliament, even though courts may be in a position to repeal sections of previous legislation. This approach is likely to be opposed by those who feel that individual rights can only be protected by giving courts the power to overrule laws which are regarded as being contrary to those rights.

Cuts in tax and red tape top contender's bill
Article Abstract:
The manifesto launched by John Redwood, who is challenging John Major for the leadership of the Conservative party, contains both populist and monarchist elements. He has emphasised his determination to reduce unnecessary government expenditure, and feels confident that he will be able to meet the tax promises made by the party when it won the 1992 general election. He has promised help for the homeless, assistance for the victims of crime and greater support for the traditional family, among other things.
