'British disease': dead or dormant?
Article Abstract:
Britain is experiencing the longest period without industrial disputes since the Second World War, but this may change when the recession ends. Growing unemployment and anti trade union legislation has made strikes unattractive as a method of industrial action. The trade unions have found it more difficult to recruit members and since 1980 membership has dropped by one third; negotiating procedures with employers has also been tightened considerably. Employers are now unlikely to yield to high wage demands, but this could change when the recession ends and workers confidence is restored.

How to make opportunity knock
Article Abstract:
Ms Kamlesh Bahl, 36, a company secretary and lawyer, becomes chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) in June 1993 as Joanna Foster leaves. When Ms Foster took the chair in 1988 women earnt 66% of men's earnings. This has risen to 71% in 1993. Ms Foster attempted to sway male employers in industry through court cases and promoted the problem of the 'demographic time bomb.' The recession cut the employment of women. Ms Bahl may use new methods to convince employers to recruit and promote women in the interests of business.

The last post
Article Abstract:
The Post Office faces an extremely uncertain future. Its market share is being taken away by foreign competitors, while existing competition from courier and parcel companies continues to pose a threat. It must also cope with the growing use of alternatives, such as fax machines and electronic mail. Staff relations have become extremely sensitive, but a strike may simply accelerate the move towards alternative services.
