Brussels can embarrass even its best friends
Article Abstract:
The unpredictable nature of European Commission policies is causing considerable embarrassment to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who always likes to be in control. Privately, Blair wishes that European monetary union had never been devised, but he is concerned about the long-term repercussions of not participating. In contrast, European Commission Pres Romano Prodi regards the purpose of European monetary union as political integration and the creation of single standards in most areas of government. The strongest threat to Blair's European vision for the UK may come from the European Union itself.

Forget about Old Labour, Mr Blair, and worry about the Europhiles
Article Abstract:
Disappointed Europhiles represent a real threat to the authority of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. There are indications that they are seeking more territory than Blair is able to yield without sacrificing support elsewhere. Blair's retreat on UK membership of European monetary union has caused concern among both New Labour monetary union enthusiasts and senior Europhiles in the Conservative party. During the period to summer 2000, Blair will come under stronger pressure from a wider range of sources.
