Business failures are flexible
Article Abstract:
Figures for business failures are based on many differing criteria and, therefore, can be easily massaged for political purposes. In 1991 there was a 30% increase over the 1990 number of winding up petitions in the UK and a 40% increase in receivership figures. Dun and Bradstreet put the increase in business failure at 65%. The Conservatives claimed there was a net increase of 10,000 businesses in this period but Labour said there was a net loss of 200,000.

Middle class 'still worse off' despite 1p rate cut
Article Abstract:
The UK government's 1995 Budget has cut 1p off the basic rate of income tax, as well as boosting personal allowances and tax thresholds. However, most middle class earners are still not as well off as they were before tax raising Budgets were introduced by former chancellor Norman Lamont, according to experts. This means that the government will have to introduce further measures if it is to regain the support of the middle classes.

Untying the financial knot
Article Abstract:
The Pensions Bill, which is currently being debated in the House of Commons, includes provisions for strengthening a former wife's right to a share of her husband's pension up to the time of the divorce. Pension schemes, rather than former husbands, will be responsible for ensuring that the wife receives her entitlement. However, there is still controversy over the issue of dividing a husband's pension fund at the time of divorce.
