Campaign to pardon troops hits setback
Article Abstract:
The last UK files on the 307 soldiers shot for desertion and cowardice during World War I will be available to the public in Jan 1994. Relatives who are fighing for posthumous pardons have been set back because thousands of records were destroyed by the Ministry of Defence in 1947. A total of 3,080 men were court martialed during the war but 90% had their sentences commuted because of medical reasons. Relatives claim that in many incidents the soldiers had little justice as medical grounds, such as shell shock were disregarded. The UK Prime Minister John Major has refused to pardon all 307 men.

Ready, steady, sue ...
Article Abstract:
The recent Queen's Speech contained proposals to introduce a fast-track judicial ruling for libel cases, with a 10,000 pounds sterling ceiling on damages. This could have some advantages, especially in terms of ensuring that excessive awards are not made and in reaching a decision quickly. However, these measures will not improve the situation in areas where the libel laws have attracted most criticism. They will only be beneficial in prompting newspaper to hesitate before publishing an untrue libel.

Cannabis: the drug we still can't accept
Article Abstract:
The majority of people in the UK still believe that cannabis should not be legalised in the near future. However, many agree that it should be available on prescription to treat certain illnesses. A recent opinion poll seems to show that attitudes towards cannabis are hardening, rather than softening, which could correspond with greater public opposition to smoking and drinking.
