Can we trust doctors when they put us under the knife?
Article Abstract:
Trust in surgeons in the United Kingdom has been affected by reports that not all surgery carried out is needed. This is the case of a quarter of hysterectomies, according to the British Medical Association (BMA) and Bupa. Bupa also aims to exercise more control over whether hysterectomies are performed, a move that is opposed by the BMA. Meanwhile, the government is setting up a National Institute for Clinical Excellence which is to issue guidelines from fall 1999. Physicians fear losing their clinical freedom, but there are problems in how they can keep skills up to date, and guidelines can be useful.

Farewell to the dear old district general hospitals
Article Abstract:
There is a proposal to close local hospitals in the United Kingdom, and set up fewer and larger hospitals in their place. The Royal Medical College argues that the best care cannot be provided at local hospitals, which can only provide a restricted service, which could exclude accident and emergency departments. Specialist teams are now seen as necessary, and this means that there has to be a large number of patients using the hospital. Critics argue that bigger hospitals do not necessarily provide better care.

'Clockwork Orange' drug now possible
Article Abstract:
Three chemicals controlling aggression have been identified by researchers from Birmingham University, England. The chemicals are neurotransmitters and can dampen aggressive responses. The research raises questions as to whether aggression can be treated with drugs, and whether certain individuals may be predisposed to aggressive behavior for genetic reasons. Critics argue that aggression is too complex to be treated by a drug alone, and that chemical imbalances are only one cause of aggression.
