Is the tedious cult of youth finally slipping into its dotage?
Article Abstract:
Worship of the cult of youth has been a key feature of the 20th century. However, there are now indications that the cult of youth is encountering difficulties. Society is becoming increasingly risk-averse, and this means that young people are reluctant to take up great personal challenges, such as going on expeditions. It now appears that the middle-aged are more willing to take risks than young people. Similarly, the labour market is beginning to recognize the value of employing older people, who have the benefit of life experience.

This doom, gloom and despair is driving everyone bonkers
Article Abstract:
Many Britons seem to have become obsessed with doom as the 20th century draws to a close. Issues of concern include the special relationship between the UK and the US, genetically modified food and the future of the Balkans. Ordinary people are focusing on potential disasters, including the likely impact of the year 2000 computer date change problem, rather than remembering that they live in a wealthy and stable democracy with low inflation and low unemployment.
