Canon David Strangeways
Article Abstract:
Canon David Strangeways was a soldier for 24 years prior to his ordination. He was involved in key covert operations in the 1939-1945 war, and led a battalion in Malayan jungles. He retired from the Army and took holy orders, studying at Wells Theological College, England, and being appointed curate in 1958. He retired in England, continuing his ministry in Ipswich, Norwich and St Edmondsbury. He had a rapport with his flock, and was a direct speaker in his sermons.

CSM George Finch
Article Abstract:
George Finch joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1908, at the age of 14. On the outbreak of the first world war, he was drafted to HMS Oropesa, which patrolled between Scapa Flow and Greenland. In 1927, he acted as detachment Sergeant Major on HMS Emerald in China, and retired from the Royal Marines in 1932. He later served in the Royal Marine Police, and at the outbreak of the second world war was responsible for training dockyard employees in fire-fighting.

Vice-Admiral Sir Roderick Macdonald
Article Abstract:
Naval officer and artist Roderick Macdonald was born in Batavia, Java, in 1921. He joined the Royal Navy in 1945, and in 1973 became Chief of Staff to Naval Home Command. He painted many landscapes of Skye.
