Greenwich mean madness
Article Abstract:
The UK government has announced plans to put the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, which is widely seen as one of the finest buildings in the world, up for auction in 1996. It brings together Baroque and Classical elements, and is in an ideal setting between the River Thames and Greenwich Park. The government is mistaken in treating this simply as another historical building. The fact that the purchaser will not have to comply with any conditions about the use of the site is a particular cause for concern.

A sweet campaign blossoms
Article Abstract:
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) plans to invest 25 million pounds sterling in revamping and extending its Wisley garden centre in Surrey. The scheme would include the relocation of its Lindley Library from Westminster, London, to Wisley. This has attracted considerable opposition from some RHS members, who believe that the library is a national asset and should therefore remain in London, where it is accessible to more people.

The sentimental socialist
Article Abstract:
Victorian designer William Morris, who died in 1896, is still very influential. Some observers believe that he has been responsible for a nostalgic approach to design which hampers new developments in architecture and design, but he remains extremely popular. He successfully developed beautiful objects for the mass market, believing that even the poorest people had the right to own objects which were both beautiful and practical.
