Charm is not enough - now Blair must take on Murdoch
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has so far taken a cautious approach in seeking to persuade those who are opposed to closer UK links with the European Union, such as Rupert Murdoch and Conrad Black, to adopt a more positive view. However, he has found that trying to win Eurosceptics over with charm is not effective, and is therefore now beginning to fight openly for UK membership of European monetary union. He must now make very clear how the UK will benefit from being part of a large Euro-currency bloc.

Tony Blair makes a quiet sidle into euro-land
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is aware that there are significant forces pushing the country towards closer integration with Europe and membership at a reasonably early stage of the single European currency. Most ordinary Britons remain opposed to single currency membership, but Blair recognizes that the single currency has become too important to fail. There has been no official change of policy on this issue, but the option of remaining outside the single currency is rapidly becoming less viable.

Could Tony ever be as big as Helmut?
Article Abstract:
German chancellor Helmut Kohl has for many years acted as leading European visionary. However, his influence is now believed to be waning, and he could face a challenge from UK Labour party leader Tony Blair if the party wins the forthcoming general election. Indeed, many European diplomats believe that Blair has the potential to play a valuable role as a counter-weight to Kohl. Blair himself has already emphasised that he wishes to play a leading role in Europe.
