Cheap labour at the end of a phone line
Article Abstract:
A number of leading international organisations, particularly airlines, are now looking to cut costs by transferring routine office work to developing countries such as India. Observers believe that this practice, known as teletrading, is set to expand even further. This has led the EC's employment and transport directorates to commission a study on the social impact of this trend. So far, teletrading has been mainly confined to data processing, which uses low-paid workers, but it is predicted that the most rapid expansion will be in occupations where higher salaries are paid.

Thaw may bring cold comfort for householders
Article Abstract:
Most home and contents insurance policies will cover the cost of damage and repairs if frost causes water pipes to burst. However, costs associated with burst pipes caused by corrosion are not covered, and most insurance companies will charge an excess of 50-200 pounds sterling on claims. Policyholders who took a winter holiday and failed to take precautions against frost may find that they have lost their insurance cover if they failed to make special arrangements with the insurer.

A pension today keeps the revenue at bay
Article Abstract:
Considerable tax savings can be made by putting income away for old age. The main consideration is whether the money will be liable for more tax now, or after retirement. The higher paid are currently enjoying very low income tax rates, and it is very likely that they will rise in the future, especially if a Labour government comes to power. It is also worth remembering that pensions contributions are inflexible, as they cannot be withdrawn in an emergency.
