Who will be the next ball out in the Great Regulators' Lottery?
Article Abstract:
The creation by the former Conservative government in the UK of an undemocratic system of regulators for many different industries can be regarded as partly responsible for the recent breakdown in trust between ordinary voters and the government. These regulators are amateurs working within very vague parameters, and their performance is not appraised in any way. Under the current Labour administration, it will be necessary for regulators to become much more interventionist. This being the case, they should be made more accountable.

Yes minister, you need the Sixsmith spin
Article Abstract:
Former BBC foreign correspondent Martin Sixsmith is now director of information at the UK Dept of Social Security. He is reported to have a strong intellectual commitment to the challenge of making welfare reform a success, but does not really have any personal political agenda. He is particularly suited to the role because of his extensive experience of the public service ethos and of the way the BBC works. He may find it extremely difficult to improve the public image of Secretary of State Harriet Harman.
