Children as young as five suffer in picking fruit for our orange juice
Article Abstract:
Welfare groups believe that some exporters of orange juice from Brazil overlook the fact that young children are sometimes used to pick oranges. Indeed, it is claimed that 150,000 Brazilian children work as orange pickers for up to 12 hours a day in very high temperatures during the six-month picking season. The economic crisis in Brazil means that even more children may be obliged to work in order to boost the income of their families. The Brazilian government is seeking to eliminate this problem, as are leading producers in the Sao Paulo, Brazil, region.
